Project: Hawksbill Sea Turtle Conservation in Panama

Turtle.jpg

Objective

By 2024, there is a 30% increase in the hawksbill sea turtle population in the Bocas del Toro region of Panama determined by number of sea turtle nesting sites on beaches.

Project description

OOCD plans to deliver a cross-sector engagement project to protect hawksbill sea turtles from poaching and bycatch in the Bocas del Toro region of Panama. Lack of enforcement, policy and public awareness are particularly problematic in this region when it comes to illegal trade and bycatch issues for hawksbill turtles. Both threats are directly contributing to the species’ decline in the wider Caribbean and local interventions are needed to address these contributing factors. OOCD has close relationships with the local enforcement authorities, thus allowing us to engage with them to develop an MOU and collaborate toward strengthening enforcement in the region to reduce hawksbill poaching and illegal gear usage. We will work to develop strong relationships with the other targeted sectors by leveraging our current enforcement relationships to build those connections.
